Are you someone who is constantly running into obstacles, with everything that you do? Are you someone who is striving to be successful, but can never get there? Are you someone who just wants to be happy? Many of us fall into one or more of these categories. We are often searching for things in the world, hoping that whatever it is will allow us to live life happy. The thing few of us realize is that many of our so-called problems have to do with our self image or lack of self-awareness.

The Subconscious Mind

We might think, If I can just get this job, then I will live life happy. If I just can get home and not have to deal with this traffic, then I will be happy. If I can just make more money, then I will live life happily. When you finally get the job, are not stuck in traffic, or make more money, do you really allow yourself to be happy? Maybe for a little while.

What usually happens is that your mind will find something new to focus on, thinking that one thing will make you happy. When you finally get the job, you might think If I could just work a different schedule, then I will live life happy. When you’re no longer in traffic, you might think If I could just have a new car, then I will be happy. And when you finally make more money, you might think, if I could just buy this, then I will be happy.

Our minds are constantly doing this. Our minds subconsciously make our happiness depend on exterior worldly matters. This is all a distraction though. A distraction from the self. We focus the great majority of our attention on exterior circumstances or objects so that we don’t have any time or energy to look inwards at ourselves.  The sad truth is, when we place our happiness on things outside of ourselves, happiness is never found. We all just want to be happy, and almost all of us are on a never-ending search of happiness. Happiness can only truly be found inside ourselves. You are happiness and peace, in your deepest essence.

How to Find Happiness

There is a little parable that goes something like this. A man once told Buddha “I want happiness.” Buddha replied, “First, remove ‘I’, that’s ego. Then remove ‘want’, that’s desire. And now all you’re left with is happiness.”

You may be wondering if finding happiness really is that simple, why are so many of us not able to find it? This is because it is a much easier task to change things or circumstances, rather than to change the way you see yourself. Sound about right? To change the way we see ourselves, would mean to face all the things you have been avoiding your entire life. Facing your inner demons, so to say.

How to Change Your Self Image

So now the question remains, how does one change their self-image? To change your self-image is to raise your conscious awareness. You must become stronger than your mind, otherwise, the mind will overtake the self. This can be done through meditation practices. To learn more about meditation practices click here. You can also raise your conscious awareness, by becoming aware of all those things you thought would make you happy but never did. This is to say, being thankful for all of the things you already have. These can also be called, positive affirmations.

Some positive affirmations could be “I am enough,” ” I am successful,” or “I am loved.” You might think, that it is hard to say those things about myself when I don’t actually believe it. To that I would say, find something positive about yourself that you do believe. Create an affirmation for that belief, and focus some of your energy on that every single day.

What to Expect

Once you finally start to believe positive things about your self, your self image starts to change. From this, more positive things will begin to happen to you. Of course, there will be those same obstacles that used to stop you from being happy before, but they will no longer affect you. This is because your happiness is no longer dependent on things outside of yourself. You will slowly begin to realize through this process, that happiness is something inside you that cannot be taken away by anyone, no matter the situation.

As you finally begin to realize the happiness that you are, all the things you used to strive for will naturally fall into place. This is the irony of the whole story. It is the Be -Do- Have paradigm. If you just BE happy, you will be able to DO all the things you want, and HAVE all the things you used to desire. Many of us are doing things the opposite way around in a Have-Do-Be mindset which is why most of us haven’t been able to find happiness. Most of us think if we HAVE all the things we want, then we can DO all the things we want to do, and then we will BE happy. This is not the case, as I have explained to you.

If you really want to find the happiness you are searching for, take a hard look inside yourself. This is the only place it can be found.

Resources

For more tips on how to change the self-image, how to manifest positive things in your life, and how to live life happy read my article on How to be Successful. In this article, I discuss how your mind plays a huge part in the outcomes of success in your life.

In my journey, I have read several texts that have helped me discover the peace and happiness that is within myself. If you are looking for more visual material to help you on your journey, I would strongly recommend picking up a copy of The Power of Now, by Eckhart Tolle, or Conversations with God, by Neale Donald Walsch. Neither of these two books is religion-based. The Power of Now was the first book I read about spiritual guidance. It has terms and concepts that are easy to understand. Conversations with God may be a book for more advanced readers, as some spiritual concepts discussed may be harder to grasp if you are just beginning.

If books aren’t your things, I would suggest watching The Secret. It is an amazing documentary that explains how happiness really only comes from within you.
