Why make your own TV stand? Well, for one people will be jealous of your handyman skills and think you are super cool (not guaranteed…). The second reason is its customizable and can be easily assembled and disassembled, which is pretty beneficial if you are a frequent mover, like myself.

When you make your own home furnishings, it not only becomes a functional item in your home, but also a piece of artwork that you can be proud of. Buying your furniture straight from the store, of course, is a lot easier. I, however, find making my own furniture pieces here and there has helped save me a ton of money. If you want to know how I made the TV stand featured in the picture above here’s how!

How to Begin

I began this project by measuring out the dimensions I wanted my TV stand to have in relation to the size of my TV and the space I had available in my living space. Once  I decided what I wanted the measurements to be, which were 6 feet in length about 1 and a half feet in width and height, I took a trip to Home Depot and picked up my materials. At the time I did not have access to a skill saw to cut my wood board at home, so I asked an employee at Home Depot to cut the wood for me.

Choosing Your Measurements

One important thing to note when deciding the size of your TV stand is the size of the cinder blocks you have available. The size of the cinder blocks is not adjustable and they will determine the height of your TV stand as well as its depth.

I picked out one single wood board that was 6′ x 4′ x 1″ and divided into several pieces. After I had the wood, I picked up several cinder blocks. I bought 4 cinder blocks based on how high I wanted my TV stand to be. If you have children at home, I would not recommend stacking more than two or three cinder block layers. Next, I picked up my wood stain and a paintbrush.

Stain and Assembly

When I got home with all my materials, I started by staining the wood boards. I only did one layer of stain. After letting the wood boards dry for a day or so I finished assembling the TV stand. When I first made this TV Stand, I lived in an apartment with carpet so I just set the cinder blocks about 4 feet apart and straight on the floor.

Now that I live in an apartment without carpet in the living room, I folded some old small rags and placed them under the cinder blocks to keep from damaging the floor. You can also use felt furniture tips instead of rags if you have some on hand. After the cinder blocks were in place I set one board and then cinder blocks again and then my top board. And that is about it! I do not have any issues with the sturdiness, and the wood boards have not become bowed with the weight of the tv for over 4 years.

Materials

Here is a list of the materials I used, all of which cost me less than $50.00 altogether

  • Wood boards ( I bought one 6′ x 4′ x 1″ board and cut it in to three 6′ x 1’4″ x 1″ boards)
  • Cinder Blocks (I bought 4 that were 1′ x 3″ x 7″)
  • Wood Stain ( this is optional. I went with the most grey color I could find)
  • Gloves and Paint brush (if using wood stain)

Use of Leftover Materials

As an added bonus I made festive paintings with the leftover wood boards to display over the holidays!
