Homemade applesauce is something that only recently came into my world. Before there were items packaged on the shelves, there was once a homemade recipe that started it all. I have been trying to go backwards in the food evolution timeline. I have hopes of finding a way to make things more wholesome and natural, as they once were. This recipe is a spin-off version from a recipe I found from a blog called Chef in Training! So, thank you, Nikki, for inspiring this recipe!
The applesauce recipe I have created below is homemade, natural, healthy, and zero waste. I opted to substitute honey, instead of granulated sugar, and to not peel the apples so that the recipe is packed full of vitamins and nutrients. To no surprise, the outcome was delicious!
Gather Your Apples
First I begin by washing off my apples, removing the cores, and chopping them into large cubes. I use golden delicious apples because they are my favorite type of apple. However, you can use whatever apples you prefer. Just be aware the recipe will taste different based on the apples you choose and the peels may not blend as easy if using anything other than the golden delicious variety.
Cook, Blend, Serve
Once my apples are chopped, I add them to medium size pan. I then add in 3/4 cup of water, 1/3 cup of honey, and 1 tsp of cinnamon, and give it a good stir. After everything is mixed, I bring the mixture to a boil then reduce the heat to low and cover the pan with lid. I then let the mixture cook for twenty minutes. When my timer goes off, I remove the pan from the heat and let it cool for ten minutes with the lid removed.
After the applesauce is done cooling for ten minutes, I use an Immersion Blender like this one to blend the mixture. I prefer there to not be any large chunks, so I blend for about two to three minutes. Careful not to burn yourself in the process of blending, I have several times…
Now that your applesauce is blended, serve it up warm on a cool fall or winter day! Or store it in the fridge in a sealed container for a week! My favorite way to eat this is definitely warm right out of the pan!
