So what is all this talk about Tibetan singing bowls nowadays? Well let me tell you, they are an interesting and beautiful tool used in meditation techniques. They are used in meditation practices for the healing sounds they create. The sound that is made when one plays a Tibetan singing bowl is almost indescribable. It may best be explained as a pulsating wave that rings in and out and echos upon itself.

When I first started using Tibetan singing bowls as a beginner, I was completely mesmerized. Their sound absolutely draws me in. It is soothing, relaxing, and it just somehow has the ability to clear your mind. For me, I can’t help but just focus on the sound whenever a singing bowl is played. If you are a beginner in meditation I would definitely recommend obtaining a Tibetan singing bowl.

The Benefits

Singing bowls are used in meditation techniques because their ringing sound creates vibrations that clear and focus the mind. Because the vibrations in the sounds made from the singing bowls are so high, they will naturally help you increase your own vibrations. When you raise your vibrations, you bring about self-healing through positive energy. As you play a singing bowl, you will be drawn into the present moment. If you embrace this feeling, it can bring you into deeper meditative states. 

How Singing Bowls Work

I purchased my first singing bowl off of Amazon for around $20. I was so pleased with my purchase that I bought an additional Tibetan singing bowl for my sister, and another for my father as a gift. One thing I did notice in trying different out different singing bowls was that they will sound different based on their design, size, and the mallet they are being played with. 

The bigger the bowl, the deeper the sound will be. While all the bowls I tried out were effective in meditation practices, I prefer when the bowl is played with a felt-tipped mallet. The felt-tipped mallet versus the regular wooden mallet plays a more peaceful sound. The wooden mallets without the felt coverings can sometimes clang on the metal bowl, which can be a bit of a distraction when listening to such a smooth sound.

How to Use a Singing Bowl

When you hold a singing bowl, you want to make sure you hold only the base. Preferably you sit the bowl on top of your fingertips, or flat on the palm of your hand. A little experimentation may be necessary. It is just like playing an instrument! You’ve got to find the right fit for you. When you are holding your singing bowl, you want to first give a nice solid tap with the mallet. Then, you slowly move the mallet in a circle around the outer edge of the bowl. The bowl will begin to ring in a continuous pulsating wave. If you have never heard one before, it is unlike any other sound you may have heard. You can definitely watch videos about singing bowls, but the sound just isn’t as spectacular as it is in person.

As you play the singing bowl, you want to be a quiet or perhaps isolated place. The quieter your space is the deeper you will feel the effects of the singing bowl. Begin your meditation practice by starting with a clear mind and open heart. Be sure to sit up straight and take long deep breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth. Allow the sound of the singing bowl to become your only focus. The vibrations of the bowl just may begin to overtake you. The longer you play the bowl uninterrupted the deeper your trance may become.
